#EditorsLab BBC #newsHACK Glasgow & Dublin on 1st and 2nd May 2014 Organised by BBC and the Global Editors Network, these Hackdays will gather teams from News organisations, academic and research institutions and members of the Global Editors Network. The teams will represent a variety of media platforms (print, digital, broadcast), for a two-day competition to develop innovative News propositions. Challenge to Participants: Make something with technology + your interests. Inspired by hacking events such as Music Hack Day and HAMR (Hacking Audio and Music Re- search), the Kimball Union Academy TECH + Hack aims to bring together KUA high school students with visionaries, researchers, and industry professionals working in science, technology, en- gineering, mathematics, music, and visual and performing arts to work together to complete projects that combine ideas from Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (or STEM) with ideas from non-STEM elds. This 26-hour hacking event aims to be fun, educational, and inspiring both to our veteran makers and to interested students who have never created using technology before. We hope, that in addition to planning and executing a project, students will gain new skills, collaborate with professionals working in STEM-relatedelds, and will be inspired to continue creating STEM-based projects. We also want to encourage students to use new technologies and hardware. We plan to have prizes for the most innovative project and the best integration of STEM and non-STEM elds.

The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success? Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 1800 past events in 120 countries around the world in 2014. The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies. All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback. Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups.

Join us at this weekend hackathon where you can lend your skills to a good cause - hacking to help mindfulness, violence reduction, crime, and other urban issues. As with our previous work with organizations like Cure Violence and Concrn, we aim to connect developers with potential beneficiaries after the hackathon, so your work can be put to good use. Some of the challenges we'll be tackling: Mindfulness Build an app that fosters an awareness in the reality of things, and enable the user to leverage technology to be more present in the moment. Help the user develop greater empathy, self-awareness, or help them with stress management. Violence Reduction Build an app that can reduce violence in youth through the promotion of social emotional learning, non-violent confrontation, and conflict resolution. Or build an app that can match positive adult role models with at-risk youths. Crime Build an app that makes the user more aware of their own personal safety and teach them strategies they can use. Use publicly available data to build awareness and to educate your audience of a particular aspect of crime or crime prevention. Urban Issues Build an app that will help non-profits working with the homeless to better organize, communicate, raise awareness, or fund raise.
