BitHack by Coinbase encourages developers to explore the possibilities of bitcoin. As an online hackathon, BitHack allows developers across platforms to participate in creating the next big thing on the Internet, while also getting a chance to win bitcoin. The top three apps will be rewarded with bitcoin, fame, and fortune (well, we can promise the bitcoin, at least). To win, build an app that is creative, useful, and beautifully executed.

The New York Times’ most popular story of 2013 was not an article. It was an interactive quiz. The Times They Are A-Changin. And we are pretty sure that games as the defining medium of the 21st century will also disrupt journalism pretty soon. The Newsgame Hackathon in Cologne is a cooperative offer from the Game Studio the Good Evil and the Cologne Game Lab opening the 2014 Clash of Realities.

LadyHacks is Philadelphia’s women only* hackathon, a community event for women of all skill levels to work collaboratively on projects using technology to provide solutions. We follow the model of a civic hackathon, with a goal of working on projects for the social good rather than hosting a competition for a commercial product. However, as a hackathon we encourage all attendees to bring their own ideas to the table, and everyone will have the opportunity to suggest a project. The theme for 2014 is A <? Room() ?> of One’s Own. In 1929 Virgina Woolf published A Room of One’s Own, which argued that women’s lack of access to education, financial independence and a room of their own held them back from achieving equality with men in the sphere of publishing. Today we see stark gender gaps in STEM awarded degrees and consequently in STEM fields. While there are no easy answers to the complex problem of gender inequity, we encourage attendees to form projects around what you think Room() should return to fill in this gap.
