Traditional hackathons are all about the location and although we love the good old fashioned way of hacking together an awesome project, our browsers are now strong enough that distance is of no consequence when it comes to creating awesome projects. We can and should get together to write code and create awesome projects, regardless of where we are. This event is intended to connect developers across the globe and get them to code together irrespective of their locations. You will problem solve and build with old or new team members and try to win!

This will be the second year for the Valley Hackathon. Last year we had 22 participants but we limited entry for the event to residents of a few valley counties. This year we are inviting the world to come over and check out the the other “Valley” and compete against our significant local talent. We are expecting 50+ participants. We will be offering a over $5000 in prize money which will include an award for the top placing team made up completely of students to encourage participation from local and Bay Area colleges and universities. Standard hackathon rules apply, we are not setting a topic for the event so come build your dream project. We are in a brand new event center in Downtown Modesto. The food on Saturday for breakfast and dinner will be provided by our hosts and will be spectacular. Vegetarian fare will be provided as well. We will have coupons from local businesses for lunch and dinner on Friday will be pizza. Snacks and drinks will be provided as well. The Valley Hackathon is a unique event because it touches the growing tech community in the Central Valley of California. As the Bay Area begins to underflow in their availability of talent and overflow in cost of living the Central Valley is a logical place to seek new talent and a better lifestyle. At least one highly successful Bay Area startup is looking to place 50 programmers in Modesto over the next three years at near Bay Area salaries. If you are a non-local, come over and check out the laid back lifestyle and great cost of living here in Modesto.

COMPETITION StartEDIN, FreeAgent, miiCard and Workpro Casework for Financial Services are sponsoring the travel and accommodation for 10 lucky applicants to participate in the Edinburgh FinTech Hackathon!! It is an event which will see software developers, designers and marketers converge to pitch ideas to each other, form teams, design and build products and present these to a carefully selected panel of judges – all within 48hours! The event theme is financial technology so ideas pitched and products built will relate to financial services. Event sponsors and mentors will be sourced from the finance and tech industries. A few speakers will open the event on the Friday night; mentors will be made available to all teams on Saturday; and a panel of judges will be invited to assess the teams on the Sunday. For the rest of the time, teams will be busy working: designing, coding, researching, as well as (hopefully) laughing, making friends, and laying solid foundations for future professional relationships. While prizes will be awarded, remember that the point of a hackathon is to come together with other like-minded people to work on solving an interesting problem, share ideas and learn from each other.
